Freedom of Speech

When I was in high school I came to a painful, at the time, realization that not everybody liked me. In fact there probably weren’t that many people who did like me. But this is how high school is for everyone. However this realization, though not made through esoteric work, changed me. It set me free. Free from trying to fit in, free from pretending to be something I was not. At the end of the day these people where entitled not to like me and I was entitled not to care.

Years have gone by and I find myself again not being liked. This time I am not being liked because I chose to stand up for what I believed and support Belzebuub, the Spiritual Teacher who changed my life. For this, I have been threatened and called names all over the internet, received emails, also sent to unknown recipients, with details of my personal life, more name calling and horrid lies about me. All this in the name of Freedom of speech!

But is this really “Freedom of speech”? See, as I see it, Freedom of speech, would be if these people sent an email or ever wrote a post in their “hate site” saying “look I don’t Eleni, never did, just thought I’d put it out there”, I would also accept some legitimate reasons why, for example: “she is to self centered, has a big idea of herself, talks too much, too loud” Something.. As I said, I have come to terms with such a reality and it does not bother me in the least, they are entitled to an opinion, even if I don’t like it. But this is not the case. The site these people created is full of hatred and false gossip and is far from supporting anyone’s freedom.

I believe great harm can be caused to a person, by bullies hiding their ill intentions behind a supposed “Freedom of Speech”. Harassment, disclosure of personal information, slander should not be tolerated just because some people wave a catchy phrase in the air.
